It all started on Thursday evening. We were scheduled to be induced and were told to call the hospital at 4:00 to see if we were able to check in. When we called, we were then told that there were no beds and to call back at 7:00. Kevin and I decided to go to his parent's house since we would need to be in the area to head to the hospital. At 7:00, we anxiously made the second phone call and were again told that there were no beds. Ugh... The nurse told us that she would call us when a room was available. Again we waited... and waited.
Around 8:00, my Mom arrived in Atlanta, so we went to their hotel to visit for a while, phone in hand. We loved catching up and chatting, but at 10:30, we wanted to get something to eat before the nurses called. As we sat at Wendy's eating a late night snack, we called the hospital once more. The house is about 30 minutes from the hospital, and we wanted to know what we needed to do... head back to our house to spend the night or continue to wait. The nurse told us that it would be VERY SOON. We chose to go to the Pace's house to wait. Sure enough, as soon as I laid down, the phone call came. Come now and check in they told us, so we were headed to the hospital at 11:30 pm. By 1:00, we were all checked in, and settled in our room. My sweet hubby wrote everything down as the night went one and took extra good care of me! I could not ask for a better husband!
Our first nurse was Ashley, and she was very nice. She put in my IV and gave me my first dose of Cytotec and a dose of Ambien to help me sleep. For 4 hours, I slept very peacefully until Ashley came back with my 2nd dose of Cytotec. No contractions yet! At 6:00 am, we got a new nurse, Cindy. At 11:50, she gave me my next dose of Cytotec and the doseage was increased. At this point, I was dialated 1 cm. We were a little discouraged... this was going very slow. At 3:30, I received my last dose of Cytotec and that did it! My parents were in the room and I was talking with my Mom. In mid-sentence, the contractions began and they came all at once. It seemed that there was no time between them. When Cindy returned to the room, it was clear that I was ready for an epidural.
Then came the hardest hour. At 5:15, the aneistesiologist came to administer the epidural. He was Russian and explained everything that was going to happen. This was one of the parts of labor that I feared the most. As I sat up in bed, my water broke. It turns out that the baby had a bowel movement in the womb and we would need several special nurses and doctors in the room to assist Wyatt when he was born. I was assured that this was not unusual and not to worry. I leaned forward and held onto Kevin for support as the epidural was put in. Soon, the pain was almost gone.
After the epidural, all was right with the world... almost. The pain from the contractions was almost gone except in one spot. Dr. Chappell told me that I had a "hot spot" and after 2 re-doses of the epidural, the doctor came back and told me he was going to give me the TOP SHELF in my epidural. That did it! NO more pain! He was my best friend!
We got a new nurse at 6:00- Michelle. She was a God Send! She let us know that she had a reputation of fast deliveries and very few C-Sections. She let me know that I was dialated to 3.5 cm. Much better than my 1 cm a few hours earlier, but still not a lot of progress. She told me to rest, so I slept, watched the Olympics, and chatted with my parents. We had lots of visitors in the waiting room all anxiously waiting the arrival of our sweet bundle of joy. Everyone came in and gave their well wishes.
Finally, at 10:00, Michelle checked me and I was dialated 8 cm in 45 minutes! She was right! Her reputation remained in tact! Everyone in the waiting room was excited!
By 11:00, we were 10 cm and almost ready to push. I was very nervous, but Kevin and my Mom were there and they were the best cheerleaders. After 37 minutes of pushing, we were blessed with our son, Wyatt. He was laid on my chest and he is the most beautiful baby! Kevin did an amazing job and was not affected by the delivery at all! My mom was an amazing coach and I could not have done it without the two of them!
Our sweet baby Wyatt was born on August 11th at 1:14 am. He weighed 6 lbs 9 oz and 19 inches long. He is a wonderful blessing that we have waited 5 long years for and we couldn't be happier! Finally, we are a family of 3!
